Little did I dream back in 1988, when we got to live in Germany for 3 years, that there were Flohmarkts & what they would lead to! Being a "stay-at-home" mom to raise our family (newborn-16 at the time), this activity fit perfectly into my/our family's schedule. I had a consignment shop outlet at which I could sell my handcrafts & "Old Bygones" (i.e. Flohmarkt finds), so financially the activity was self-supporting for me & for all the fabulous vendor people whom I got to see on a regular basis. It was a sad day when I had to learn the German to tell them I was going back "home." And little did I know that in another 10-15 years, I'd have a thing called a computer, and the Flohmarkt-type items would be at my fingertips via eBay.de when I had family or a friend in Germany to receive my German eBay.de mail.

Aldi's is the only German grocery store I went to on a regular basis while living in Wiesbaden. When we came back to the States, within one year I saw an Aldi's on our drive back home to Wisconsin! It was an immediate STOP (the Christmas season) AND they had the exact same stollen mit marzipan as in Germany during our years there, AND it was the exact same price - - even with importing!! I couldn't believe it. At that time it was a 1,000 gr. stollen for $3.00. WHAT A JOY❣

The medieval fairy tale old town of Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, surrounded by a wall on which you can walk, is the home of the original, & first, of the vast Kathe Wohlfahrt stores. If you want a taste of thousands of finely crafted, decorative-type objects which are "all things German," you'll get it here. And I just checked because I remember a massive store in Frankenmuth, Michigan (it's Bonner's), but Kathe Wohlfahrt's permanent store in the U.S. is in Stillwater, Minnesota.

~ 2 tins of rabbits at Easter time ~ Contents of chocolate & shortbread cookies made in Germany.
Just adding this in here because it is a tin of German-named shops along a street (Made in China for the USA);
3" x 4.75" x 5"; bought in a TS; (TTM#4401) This would have been sold empty as a decor or other-use item.

**Cookie Serving Dishes +
The kind of tin serving dish on the left, made in Germany, dates back to post WWII days. Maybe even before, but I remember them from my childhood days. And every once in awhile, an old one of flowers, etc., appears in a thrift shop. I just don't have a photo of one on hand. Prior to tin, there were shaped cardboard ones "Made in Japan" (pre-WWII). This is about 1" deep.
The porcelain plate on the right is of a German Lebkuchen baking scene, 10", purchased off eBay.de about 2007 when I had a friend in Germany to bring it back for me.
The 3rd item of interest which relates to stollen, sometimes sold in a tin, is this footed, German stollen serving board. It's the only one I've ever seen . . . long enough to hold a 1000 gr. (around 2#) loaf. Maybe they are or have been a commercial item to buy, but then again, it's possible it was handmade for someone & hand decorated with the wood-burning designs on the top.
**CIGARETTES
'Borg Orient' is the tobacco/cigarette company. I loved the colors & map drawings on this tin. It is quite small, but a treasure. In German it says, "Borg makes good cigarettes. The cigarettes are made from the finest tobaccos from these regions." Then there are the names of 14 areas on the map by the Aegean Sea.

These are 3 cigarette boxes, & I have no recall as to getting/receiving them. Nevertheless, someone might be able to fill in some history about this man.

Live & Learn! The following is what happens when a florescent bulb burns out & when you go buy a new one, you don't know that those bulbs are different kinds (like one for growing plants, etc.) And not until after doing a photo shoot of a few dozen tins, packing them all away, & some days later editing on the phone, then downloading, & THEN seeing a pink or blue hue on EACH photo, do you realize there is a major problem!!! So you can just make believe you're seeing this gingerbread house through a hazy snowstorm 🤣. (date: 2021)
